On Wednesday 20 April 2016, the Royal Marines Band visited Jumeirah College. At 9am, the Band performance, marching and parading in full uniform around the astroturf at JPS. The audience for this performance included the whole student body from JPS, parents, GEMS student musicians and invited guests from GEMS Corporate Office.
At 10am, the musicians from the Marines Band ran workshops for student musicians from GEMS. The 41 student musicians who took part in the workshops represented 11 different GEMS schools. They had all benn recommended to be part of the day by their GEMS Music Academy or GEMS school music teacher and were all of a minimum grade 3 ABRSM performance standard on their instrument as the workshops included a significant amount of sight-reading some challenging music! The Marines ran 3 workshops – one for string players, one for wind players and one for drummers.
At 12:45pm, there was a second concert. This audience for this concert was the whole of the KS3 student body from JC, parents of the participating GEMS student musicians and more guests from GEMS Corporate Office, including the Chief Education Officer, Sir Christopher Stone. This concert was stage-based rather than parade based and allowed opportunities for the student musicians of GEMS to perform alongside the Marines Band on the stage.
